                  WELCOME TO OCEANSIDE ROTARY

President BILL DERN gaveled our meeting open at 12:30 pm at his last official meeting. ERNIE MASCITTI gave the invocation and thanked the Rotarian organization for the good works that they do and prayed for a safe trip home for our troops serving in Iraq.  The pledge was then led with great pomp and circumstance by HALE FELLOW.

PRESIDENT DERN noted it was his last meeting and joyfully led the club in our Smile Song. He asked DAVE NYDEGGER what he thought the Presidents next favorite song would be and though his guess of America the Beautiful was a good one, the President was aghast that a fellow swabie wouldn’t have guessed ANCHORS AWAY.  The President then helped the non-navy folk with some of the less obvious lyrics like drink through the foam. That song was followed by God Bless America. And although it was not part of the later grueling test the President put us through, an astute Rotarian did guess that the Cell Phone song that rang out of the President’s phone was in fact the USC fight song. (And no one aware who had the fining authority -- suggested that he fine himself for the cell phone infraction??  We’re losing it!)

The President than asked our President-Elect to give the announcements and in the signs of a possible early coup TERRI HALL walked to the podium. She was told she had to wait a year and DEAN ANDERSEN took the microphone.

DEAN asked if a memorial service had yet been scheduled for CLARE MCGINNIS who, after a long illness, had passed away earlier in the week. RENE said we won’t know till we hear from her daughter and keep family and that information would then be shared. (ed note:  Latest word is that the service will be held Tuesday, June 24 at 2 p.m. – graveside at Mission San Luis Rey.  A reception will follow in the garden.)  DEAN asked that we keep CLARE and her family in our thoughts and prayers.

On a happier note DEAN reminded all that the Demotion Dinner for President DERN was on Friday, June 20th at El Camino Country Club at 6pm and that advance reservations were required and Friday was the last day for reservations. ($45 per person) DEAN urged all to attend and to get prepared for the fun by being there for the cocktail hour.

There will be a District Council dinner on June 24th at the La Jolla Marriott. DEAN would lead his first board meeting on June 25th at 5:30 pm at TERRI HALL’s home.  Board members were asked to please RSVP. Cocktails were again mentioned (mmmmmmmmmm possible insight into the new President’s reign?)

The President-Elect then reminded all that we would be dark next Friday, June 20th because BILL wants to quit early and that we would also be dark on Friday June 27th. Blah-Blah-Blah then noted the new Reign will officially begin on Friday, July 11th and the District Governor will be visiting (no pressure DEAN!!!)

DEAN asked JACK FELLER to bring everyone up to speed (or to the first tee) about the Monday Golf Tournament. JACK thanked everyone for helping get ready for this major fundraiser and said that RANDY MITCHELL did a great job getting stuff together- including a list of other things that “JACK ought to do” which reminded him of another Rotarian.  JACK noted that 24 golfers were participating from our club and that there were a lot of sponsors too. He noted that sponsorship meant pure profit for the club and that it was a good way to get their name in the headlights or headlines.  (Reporter aside: Either way you might get read)

JACK said there were a lot of great prizes but we still needed little things. He thanked the MIKE and BEN WESELOH team who, once again, were putting up a free car to the golfer that shot a hole-in-one. (It was noted that when he mentioned this, BEN gave a funny grin and had his fingers crossed that it wouldn’t happen and JIM SCHRODER suggested with the current gas prices they might WANT to give away a Hummer!)

JACK noted that the WESELOHs made this generous potential donation every year to support the club and the golf tournament.

JACK also noted that one of the prizes donated by President BILL DERN was a $500 stay in a San Francisco hotel. Someone asked -  “You don’t have to stay with President BILL do you??” and the President said, “Well it is San Francisco!” Amongst the laugher CHUCK WARD added another funny comment but since this is a ”G” rated newsletter…

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

JIM SCHRODER introduced DR. MICHAEL CURTAIN and his son MICHAEL (JIM’s been out of the country and is a little confused.  He meant DR. TOM CURTAIN!)

ERIN GUZMAN introduced her father, retired OUSD associate superintendent, BRIAN SULLIVAN and our speaker, ANNA WINN.

The club then sang a rousing, enthusiastic Welcome Song.

CLUB BIRTHDAYS

PRESIDENT BILL then noted some notable birthdays including:

JANET LACY who was $60 happy because “many of those who knew me never thought I would make it.”

CHUCK WARD noted it was not yet his birthday and was therefore $20 happy that “I’m NOT 50 (yet)!”

WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES

TERRI HALL noted that in her culture couples were married when they were but young children which would explain her 40th Wedding Anniversary and two grandkids who will turn 6 this year - so after that elaborate intro she had $100 for the Oceanside Foundation.

Taciturn and not overly enthusiastic ERNIE MASCITTIE was $20 happy to celebrate his 18th anniversary.

TRISH SPENCER was $20 happy about her anniversary.

DAVE NYDEGGER noted that although his wife was 36 years old they were celebrating their 41st anniversary and he was contributing $27 because Oceanside had recently been named in a national magazine the 27TH best city in the Nation to raise a family!

PRESIDENT BILL DERN then asked JACK FELLER to auction off a beautiful sunflower arrangement, which had been donated by fellow Rotarian NANCY ROCHE from JJ SUITE PARADISE FLOWERS. JACK noted that she had also donated for the golf tournament a monthly flower arrangement for an entire year as an auction item!

RUDY VAN HUNNICK got a free get-out-of-the-doghouse flower arrangement for the winning $50 bid.

After an entire DERN year you would think a contest entitled “DO YOU REALLY KNOW YOUR PRESIDENT?” would be no problem for our members, but there were a lot of dollars thrown on the table by less than knowledgeable Rotarians.  Now dear readers before YOU get too cocky let’s have YOU take the true/false test and see how you do! Bring your wrong-answer-dollars to the next Rotary meeting. (Answers below)

GET TO KNOW THE PRESIDENT BILL DERN

  1. I was born in Selma, Calif. My dad worked for the post office, was president of the school board and handed me my high school diploma. I graduated from CSU Fresno and USC dental school. I have a younger sister and an older brother.
  2. In elementary school I was a milk monitor and once was caught on top of the school roof. I played the piano at the school talent show and received the lowest grade in my life for 5th grade penmanship.
  3. As a child, I loved baseball. I had the complete starting line-ups for the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Braves and New York Yankees by eating lots of dry cereal. In little league, I got a base hit my first time at bat and did not get another hit for three years.
  4. While in high school, I earned the rank of Eagle Scout and the God and Country Award through scouting, received the Betty Crocker Award at the senior assembly and played in the California State Honor Band twice as a tuba player.
  5. In college, I was elected student body president, was most valuable player on the schools golf team and spoke at the graduation ceremony.
  6. I met my wife working for the national park service as a park ranger. She was on one of my walks. Four months after we were married, I took my wife on a 100+ mile backpack trip in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We ran out of toilet paper 4 days into the trip.
  7. I have been married for 35 years, have 5 sons and 1 grandson, two of my sons graduated from college, one works for Microsoft and one for Cardinal Health. The youngest 3 attend SFSU. I served 20 years in the U.S. Navy and retired with the rank of Captain. I served as a commanding officer for 2 years.
  8. At one time, I was going to be a minister, a professional scouter in the Boys Scouts of America or a physician. My draft number was 88, so if I had not made it into dental school, I was going to enter the Air Force ROTC program. I had my induction physical 4 weeks before starting dental school.
  9. By far, I have been the best club president Oceanside Rotary has ever had. (Yea, sure BILL!!) PRESIDENT BILL DERN then donated $100 because he’d had a great year - and thus began

HAPPY DOLLARS



JIM SCHRODER was $40 happy to be a friend of CLARE McGINNIS and she would be remembered an asset to the club and for her tasty cookies. He just returned from another journey - this one to name a few, Russia, Estonia, Finland, and Copenhagen and found that both food and gas were very expensive. One highlight of the trip was finding a body in the river in St. Petersburg River with a rope around it. (Overheard in the background . . “That was the highlight??”)

SUSAN ASATO had $ 20 to say “Although we will all miss CLARE we know when we get to heaven she will be there smiling and with a plate of cookies waiting for us!”

GORDY WITZ was so happy ($20) he sent the Reporter this note:

“I would really appreciate it, if you could include this in your next newsletter as I know that there may be some Rotarians would like to donate to Rotary's foundations and at the same time acquire a chair that is a work of art. Come celebrate this display of "Chairs for Charity" on Sunday June 22, 2008 from 2-5 at the office of Century 21 Mission, 501 Mission corner of Coast Highway . This will be a One-Woman Show of Hand-Painted Chairs by B.J. Witz, who was chairperson of the Oceanside Art Commission for 10 years. She will have a total of at least 10 chairs with a couple with matching tables. It will be a silent auction beginning at 2 with bidding closing approximately at 4:30 when bids will be paid for and the money going to the charity of the bidder's choice.  There will be a selection of suggested charities, such as Casa de Amparo, Women's Resource Center, KOCT, Oceanside Museum of Art and Brother Benno's, Rotary Foundation and Soroptomist Club but not limited to those! Come and enjoy wine and cheese and some appetizers from Garcia's Restaurant. For questions call B.J. at 760-757-4488.”

JACK FELLER was $5 happy after returning from a nostalgic trip to South Dakota. They had a great family time together revisiting their roots including an old cemetery in which JACK could not believe there were so many headstones with FELLER and NELSON on them. He also said the City of Oceanside owes JANET BLEDSOE-LACY a debt of gratitude for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship event she hosts at her home. Fifteen of our brightest kids get to go to college because of this foundation and event. (17 years in a row!)



JAY CRAWFORD was $20 happy to be leaving on a road trip to Montana.

LARRY O’HARRA was $10 happy he recently received a phone call from Rotarian MARVIN MICK who, with his wife ELLIE, was on a round the world trip & LARRY and COLLEEN have been invited to meet up with them in Australia and New Zealand!

RAFFLE

VICKIE PROSSER not only had the winning raffle ticket, she pulled the winning card and won $147 a fitting DERN end to El Presidentes winning reign.

SPEAKER

ERIN GUZMAN then introduced our speaker, ANNA WINN, a San Diego District Attorney, who lives in San Marcos with her husband who is a San Diego County Sheriff. ANNA opened her remarks with the rare but funny Blonde MAN joke and then gave the club some serious information about Identity Theft.

She explained that much of the crime we experience in San Diego is drug related and that includes Identify Theft.  They steal to support their drug habit and 90% of drug users are methamphetamine addicts.  She said stolen mail is a large part of Identity Theft that those big clusters of mailboxes on rural roads with the flags up look pretty and especially pretty to criminals.  After stealing your mail, they will return to their identity theft lab - a room with computer, scanner and check-writing software. They will take your bank routing number, print up new checks, make some fake ID and make enough cash to get three weeks worth of drugs.

She also suggested having a charge card you only use for restaurants or for your on-line purchases. Do not use your ATM card!  Criminals often get purses and wallets when they break into cars and sometimes only steal a card or two so you might not even notice for a few hours during which they are making charges on your card (and they appreciate that you left that sticky note with your PIN number!)

ANN encourages people to use shredders and warned about those internet or phone calls from Africa with the “nice” man who is having trouble getting money deposited in a US bank.  She also reminded all that the IRS never uses e-mail.

As an odd coincidence, former Oceanside Rotarian, PHIL FLANAGAN contacted CHUCK WARD and dropped by a  printed copy of an e-mail he received from Rotary International letting him know he was selected to receive about $2,000,000 from Rotary Foundation International Grant Cash Award from the United Kingdom.  Clearly, this is a fishing scam.  He wanted others to know this is out there.  They are even targeting Rotarians!  BEWARE!!!

PRESIDENT DERN then thanked our speakers and reminded all that our next regular meeting is on July 11th and to make sure to come and give our new President a hard time.

El Presidente’s final thoughts were from British Anthropologist Ashley Montagu: “The only measure of what you believe is what you do. If you want to know what people believe, don’t read what they write, don’t ask what they believe, just observe what they do.”

And the meeting was adjourned at 1:30 pm.
